South Western DistrictsAll-rounder
Andile Phehlukwayo, a native of Durban, is a South African all-rounder who contributes with bat, ball and in the field. He bats in the lower order and bowls medium pace, and he has been used for overs in the middle of an innings and later as a death-bowling option. As a youngster he played both hockey and cricket, and although hockey brought him a scholarship, he chose cricket.
His early exposure at a higher level brought little reward. He belonged to the South Africa squad that won the Under-19 World Cup in 2014, but he appeared in only one match and made no major mark. Later that same year he travelled to India with the Dolphins for the Champions League, where he again struggled to make an impact. He responded by putting in focused work on his game. The turning point came in the 2015-16 season, when he finished as the Dolphins' leading wicket-taker in the T20 competition. That earned him a quick call-up to a South Africa XI that faced the touring England team in a warm-up fixture in Kimberley.
Steady displays on A tours pushed him into the senior one-day side for home ODIs against Ireland and Australia in 2016, and he played a central part as South Africa beat Australia 5-0. A groin injury picked up in a domestic match then interrupted his rise. He returned for the ODIs against Sri Lanka, developed into a specialist at the end of the innings, and was chosen for the 2017 Champions Trophy. Soon afterwards he was added to the squad for a four-match Test series against England, though he did not play. His Test debut arrived against Bangladesh in 2017.
He had become a regular in the ODI team by 2019 and was regarded as an important member of South Africa's World Cup effort that year, making contributions with both bat and ball. He claimed 11 wickets, second only to one teammate in the side's wicket tally. He travelled as a reserve with the squads for the 2021 and 2022 T20 World Cups, and he was selected in South Africa's 15-player group for the 2023 Cricket World Cup.
