Toby Roland-Jones, a native of Ashford, did not always look destined for life as a professional cricketer. During his studies in Accounting and Management at university in Leeds, a career in the game appeared a remote prospect, and it was only in his last year there that things began to change. Umpires who had seen him in action liked what they saw and recommended him to a few counties, which eventually led to a deal with Middlesex. He made that move in 2010 after failing to secure a contract at the club he had previously been with.

His first campaign with Middlesex, in 2010, brought him 36 first-class wickets. A tall fast-medium bowler, he kept up his progress and reached 100 first-class wickets with an average of roughly 20. The 2012 season proved his most productive, yielding 61 wickets and a call-up to England Lions. Injuries then halted his momentum for a while.
He returned strongly in 2015, when he struck a lively century against Yorkshire. The following season he collected 54 wickets for Middlesex, and his hat-trick against Yorkshire, taken in dramatic circumstances, steered the county to the Championship, their first since 1993.
On the county circuit, Roland-Jones has a reputation for landing the ball on the seam time after time, and for extracting movement whenever the surface offers any assistance. That skill was on show in 2017, when he claimed five wickets in an innings on his Test debut, against South Africa at The Oval.
He also holds an unusual distinction: he is the sixth England international cricketer with a hyphenated surname, and the first since Norman Stewart Mitchell-Innes, known as Mandy, in 1935.
