Much of his early reputation came from age-group cricket, where he was widely seen as a possible future Protea. Across 24 Youth ODIs he claimed 41 wickets at an average of 13.66. On South Africa's Under-19 tour of England in July 2011 he topped the bowling, collecting 14 wickets at 16.14. At the Under-19 World Cup in August 2012 he added 7 wickets at 14.42 as the South African team led by Quinton de Kock finished third.

His progress hit a setback in December 2012, when Cricket South Africa named him as one of two bowlers whose actions were considered suspect. He went through a period of remedial work, adjusted his action, and passed a fresh assessment, which cleared him to bowl again in first-class cricket. He went on to become the Dolphins' main spin option in the limited-overs formats.

In 2015 he travelled to England for league cricket, turning out for Flixton in the Bolton and District Association. He contributed with both bat and ball there, making 225 runs at 32.14 and picking up 24 wickets at 10.17, including two five-wicket hauls. He cut the stint short and went back to South Africa for personal reasons, and he was keen to come back to England for the 2016 season.
