Tushar Deshpande comes from Kalyan, a town on the fringes of Mumbai, and has represented Mumbai in domestic cricket. For a long stretch he toiled on the domestic circuit with limited reward and little attention. It was only once he was into his 20s that his career began to gather real momentum, which makes him something of a late developer.
The Indian Premier League gave him his first significant opening in 2020, when Delhi Capitals added him to their ranks. That first campaign was a disappointing one. He appeared in 5 matches and managed only 3 wickets.
Chennai Super Kings then gambled on him, bringing him in during 2022. His first appearance for the franchise came in a season-opening fixture, and in that game he earned a place in the league's history as the first player ever used as an impact substitute. CSK mainly handed him the ball at the death, and in that demanding role he proved a steady wicket-taker, although his economy rate suffered. He finished with 21 wickets in the 2023 season and 17 in the 2024 season. He was also in the side that won the 2023 final.
His rise reached the international stage in July 2024, when he earned his first T20I cap for India in a match against Zimbabwe.
