Sport offered him more than one path. At the age of 17 he had to choose between cricket and Australian Rules Football, and he settled on cricket, saying that was where his heart lay and that he hoped to make a professional career of it.
His senior opportunities arrived quickly. In January 2017 he played List A cricket for a CA XI that took on the touring Pakistan side. Victoria and the Melbourne Renegades then handed him rookie contracts, the latter ahead of BBL 07. When he turned out for Victoria against South Australia in the JLT One-Day Cup, that appearance made him the youngest player from the state to have featured in List A cricket.
At junior international level he represented the Australia Under-19 team and also captained it, earning selection for the World Cup staged in New Zealand in January 2018. Leadership has continued to feature in his career since then, with Sutherland serving as captain of the Melbourne Renegades during the 2023/24 Big Bash League season.
