Weatherald is a left-handed batter with an attacking, eye-catching approach, and his game is generally seen as better suited to the shorter formats. He first came to wider notice in the 2016-17 domestic season, when he played his first First-class and List A matches for South Australia.

His early form quickly led to more opportunities. In 2016/17 he was signed to a Big Bash League contract by the Adelaide Strikers. The following season, 2017/18, was his breakthrough campaign. In the years after that, he stayed a key member of both South Australia and the Strikers.
His value has never rested on his batting alone. Weatherald is known as a superb fielder, and he has given spectators plenty of memorable moments, including a number of astonishing catches. His career also took him to another league when the Quetta Gladiators picked him for the 2021 edition of the PSL.
